It's been a while since I stumbled across such excellent writing. At times this book is painful, at times it is laugh out loud funny. It is a book to be savored, not inhaled. The sentences themselves are works of art! If you're an avid reader then you will know what I mean, and this one could be your next real treat. In a world or reworked and regurgitated sci-fi themes, this is truly one-of-a-kind, and it's bizarre enough that I'm not even going to attempt to describe it... just read the synopsis! Like all good fiction this book is hard to categorize, but you could argue comparisons with authors like PKD, William Gibson, Neil Gaiman, and Douglas Adams, some of my favorites. I am obviously late to the game with the work of James Morrow, but luckily there is plenty more to ingest. A lifetime, in fact. The very day I finally got curious enough to look him up on Wikipedia it just happened to be James Morrow's 70th birthday.Tags : Continent of Lies [James Morrow] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Continent of Lies James Morrow 9780671559694 Books Reviews
I've read Continent of Lies quite awhile ago but I have not forgotten that it delivered the absolutely most frightening nightmare that I could possibly experience.
Morrow truly understands real fright. Not the fright of most horror films, or the fright of a really good Halloween Haunted House, but perhaps the fright of a Nazi concentration camp for example, but in a very different context. Every piece of the this nightmare is beautifully crafted, the scenery, the characters, every prop, every little detail is there for a purpose.
This is very early Morrow, so if you expect the terrific satire and sardonic wit of his later books, you may be disappointed by the Continent of Lies, as one reviewer has found. I can also see where some of the other critics come from, but the sheer power of it all lies in the psychological insight that lies at the core of this story.
I think it is Masterful - the imagery is visual, gripping, and heart stopping, just like your worst nightmare. I still cannot forget it.
Edited 3/3/2017 I just bought the copy of this book, since my original review was based on the paperback version. Still highly recommended.
The Continent of Lies deals with a futuristic society where entertainment has evolved to an extreme level. Rather than watch TV or movies, you simply eat a "cephapple" and experience the story as a dream into which you are inserted as the main character. The cephapple--also known as a dreambean--is like a real apple (without seeds), and Morrow provides many examples that run the gamut of genre and type.
The central character, Quinjin, is a dreambean critic who comes across a bean so sinister that it has the potential to enslave humanity. He sets off on a quest to destroy the tree from which it sprang, along with his teenage daughter, his hedonistic "rich boy" friend, and his psychobiologist/dreamweaver girlfriend (not to mention a robot that longs to be a James Bond type secret agent).
Like his other books, CoL is funny, clever, and fairly well-plotted. I was put off, however, by the extensive "sci-fi-ish" vocabulary early in the book, and I almost put it down around page thirty. In fact, if I hadn't been a fan of Morrow's other works (especially Towing Jehovah), I probably wouldn't have continued. Still, once I got absorbed by the story, it was hard to put down, and there were enough twists and turns that I found I couldn't really predict what was going to happen.
All in all, a worthwhile and fun read, if not as "thinky" as some of his other books.
This is a book that is excellent for meditation thoughts
The kindle version was on sell for a dollar and I bought it on whim. Beyond pleased that I did. The unfamiliar language was off putting for a handful of pages, then I was completely swept away. Brilliant read
My fourth read by the author and by far my least favorite. I've been trying to figure out what this book didn't work for me...it did, after all, had classic Morrow traits of good humor, original plotting and wild imagination. Maybe it's because despite his intentions as outlined in the author's afterword this one didn't really come across as a something with strong sociopolitical message, but more as a sort of space opera on an acid trip. It's a great premise, dream inducing fruit (cephapples) that essentially isolates the dreamer and thus can leave them amenable to certain things like mind control. They might even find themselves enslaved by an evil megalomaniac with delusions of grandeur. Though not if our intrepid(ish) hero and his motley gang have their way. The story dragged, particularly in the middle and came across too trippy for its own good, very difficult to get into or stay engaged in. Certainly an underwhelming sophomore effort from a very talented author. Don't let this be your introduction to Morrow. It's decent enough, but, given the author's potential, disappoints. The moral is there, though, individual entertainment screws up the fabric of society. Something to think about, if one can put their phone down for long enough.
A psychiatrist friend recommended a James Morrow novel to me, thinking that I would appreciate its irreverence. This was pre Internet, so I went to the library where they didn't have the recommended novel but did have "The Continent of Lies". It has ever since been a favorite. It's a beautiful work that transcends the genre. Many Morrow novels seem to be companions to or inspired by other historically important works, such as the Bible or "On The Origin Of Species". In this way "The Continent of Lies", though arguably presented as a pulp science fiction paperback can be paired with Freud's "The Interpretation of Dreams".
