I absolutely loved this book! I hope JT Lewis writes more stories about Jesse Flanagan! I was excited when I read at the end that hopefully there would be more, so my fingers are definitely crossed. Honestly, I read this book in one sitting; I just couldn’t put it down.

I loved how we got the story in both past and present; the flipping back and forth could get a little confusing. In my opinion it only added to the charm of the story overall. I didn’t find it to distracting and it was wonderful to see how everything played out in the end.

Characters: Jesse Flanagan was extremely detailed and well developed. I loved the antiquity dealer long before the action started (not that you have to wait long for it)! Even the supporting characters in this book were detailed. You can understand their actions and feelings.
Main Setting: New York City; which was absolutely perfect for this book!
Plot: Like I said before, I absolutely loved the story line here. Jesse finds an old antique desk that is created by the makers of the resolute desk. After trying many combinations, he is able to access the secret compartment and in it he finds an old document from the Revolutionary era written in Latin.

After contacting an old friend to appraise the value and find a seller, the friend ends up murdered in his antique shop. So Jesse not only meets a beautiful detective but also has to find a new buyer on his own. Jesse contacts William Nash knowing little about him, except he has the connections Jesse needs. When he is expecting Mr. Nash to show up a hired hit man shows up and tries to kill him. Jesse ends up running via a hidden tunnel. But he quickly learns that he is a very wanted man, by the wrong people. Unsure why they are so interested in him he begins to research the document hoping to find something out. I don’t want to give away too much of the story because you really need to read this book but once the action starts, it just doesn’t stop.
Writing Style: I loved JT Lewis’s writing style! It is reminiscent of Clive Cussler in my opinion, right down to using the authors name as a character in the book. There was pretty much non-stop action here. Everything was brought together nicely before the end of the book.
Cover: The cover was eye catching, a little Indiana Jones-ish!
Stars: 5

The Artifact Hunter Volume 1 JT Lewis 9781492313656 Books Reviews

Enjoyable. A nice summer read.
J.T. Lewis has quickIy become my favorite author. I am disappointed when his books end. The Artifact Hunter is one of those " sit on the edge of the seat" type books that I couldn't put down. He moves back & forth between centuries and today constantly keeping you informed, yet wanting more. The story unravels with many twists and turns, but always keeps you up to speed, while leaving the big question unanswered until the end. He reminds me somewhat of Alfred Hitchcock in the way he can keep you spellbound and guessing right to the last. I highly recommend this book if you're into mysteries, intrigue, and well written books.
This is the first novel I've read by J.T. Lewis, and I'm impressed so much I didn't put the book down for hours and only then because the dogs were howling for dinner! This novel actually is two stories about the same treasure. It begins in the New York Colony, March 1777, when British soldiers are trying to assert their dominance over the early Americans. A courier is riding on horseback with a delivery to make. But he doesn't make it, and he and the pouch he is carrying wind up in the muddy bog. The hijackers manage to retrieve the bag, but the document inside a leather pouch cannot be interpreted as they cannot read. Now in modern times, Jesse Flanagan is an artifact hunter, buying and selling goods normally found at estate sales. He has obtained a William Everden desk, known to have been built from the timber of HMS Resolute, the old British ship trapped in the Canadian Arctic in 1854. Inside a hidden drawer is a leather pouch containing a document written in Latin, obviously a very rare document. Jesse Flanagan receives a message from Abraham Kahen, an old antique dealer, to come quickly to his shop. Jesse had delivered some photos of the antique desk to Abraham to ascertain the value of the desk. Arriving at Abe's shop, Jesse is shocked to find the shop had been broken into and vandalized. Worst yet, he finds Abe in the rear of the store, covered in blood ... dead. When Jesse finally leaves the crime scene once the police are done, he and Detective Gabby Kline share some time at a nearby coffee shop. She leaves her card with him, after he provides more information to her than he should have. Now he is tasked to find a broker to handle the sale of the desk. The man is William Nash ... the man who conspired to get Abe killed. But William Nash is really after the leather sleeve containing the document, and Jesse Flanagan's life is at stake. This story also follows those in the late 1700-early 1900's as the historic document moves from place to place, hand to hand. The writing is superb and very creative, pace is vigorous, and the characters captivating. The reader can't help to stay with this story to find out the translation of this document. I'm enthralled with this fast-read novel and plan on reading many more from Author J.T. Lewis.
