My family lost 4 beloved members in 13 months 6 years ago. I've spent alot of time since asking why. This book had the answers. I don't know where Susan Gregg Gilmore came up with the idea for this book, but I believe it should be required reading for all of us. I will be buying numerous copies to give my family. I encourage everyone who reads this review - make a cup of your favorite drink, lock your doors, put the phone on silent, curl up in your favorite "my space" happy spot, and take an afternoon to read this book. You will be glad you did.Tags : ,Susan Gregg Gilmore,Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen: A Novel,Shaye Areheart Books 11,0307395014
Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen A Novel Susan Gregg Gilmore 9780307395016 Books Reviews
The author has created in Catherine Grace Cline the best of Southern fiction told from the viewpoint of a young girl. Catherine Grace is a motherless child, the spunky daughter of a Baptist preacher who spends her entire childhood planning her escape from rural Ringgold, Georgia. She can't wait to turn 18 and begin her life in the Promised Land of Atlanta.
The characters are vivid and real from her adoring sister Martha Ann to Gloria Jean Graves, the unflappable neighbor who becomes a surrogate mother for Catherine Grace, to Eddie Franklin, the Dairy Queen employee who can make chocolate dipped cones better than anyone and gets that perfect curlicue at the top every time.
This is a tale of growing up in the South, a story of dilly bars and perfect red tomatoes, of first love and shopping for a prom dress, of impatiently waiting for the good Lord to answer your prayers just like you want Him to. But more importantly, it is the story of the ties that bind us to the people we love and what happens when those ties are cruelly broken, when we discover that people's actions can belie what they say in very hurtful and long-lasting ways. It is a story of love and redemption told with lots of humor that will have you teary-eyed one minute and laughing the next. But most of all, it is a story of hope and learning that, strange as it seems, a jar of homemade strawberry jam really can make all your dreams come true.
Very disappointing, depressing, thought I was ordering a book by an author, who wrote similar to Fanny Flagg, who shared stories with quirky characters with humor. No, I found the three books I read by Ms. Gilmore ok thru the first half and then dragged on to a sad ending. I feel reading three of her books was a good example of her writing hoping to give her a chance, but I should have stopped after two.
I absolutely loved the story. Quite a few giggles, and some tears. I will say that this, like other books I have read, would be improved with a good editor. Many people think an editor is only to watch for grammatical error's, but they are trul I absolutely loved the story. I will say that this, like other books I have read, would be improved with a good editor. Many people think an editor is only to watch for grammatical errors, but they are also for watching for minor story errors. Other than a few of those, I found this to be truly enjoyable, and one that I will recommend often.
"Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen A Novel" by Susan Gregg Gilmore is a great story about family, faith, friendship, and love in a small Georgia town. The main character is Catherine Grace, daughter of the local Baptist preacher.
Anyone who has ever lived in a small town or been a member of a small church, especially in the South, will recognize the many characters. The book contains humor, anger, rebellion, disappointment, loss, and eventually, awareness of one's place and calling. Many of the scenes center around the local Dairy Queen, where Catherine Grace and her sister go for ice cream, where Catherine Grace goes to think, and where she gets some good advice from a friend.
The book is entertaining, with an ending that satisfies. And if readers recognize, in these endearing characters, people from their own youth, that's just an added benefit.
This book has been on my list of books to read for quite some time but I have always hesitated to pull the trigger and buy it. I'm glad that I did. The book is set in the south at a time when women didn't have the options we have today. It is the story of a girl who aspires to be more than someone's wife and dreams of leaving her small town where that is really her only option. It is interesting to me what she sees as a 'career' and worthy of giving up her family to do. I was a little concerned that at the end of the book the author was going to wrap everything up all nice and sweet and was relieved when that wasn't entirely case. The direction that the characters take at the end of the book is realistic if not 'and they lived happily ever after'.
I really loved this book. This new author did a great job capturing the sweet voice of the young girl growing up in a small Georgia town where little seems to happen and she is eager to get away to a more exciting life. The characters are described as seen through the eyes of Catherine Grace and carry all the depth and lack thereof you'd expect from a rather self-absorbed young person, but that added to the overall realism and charm of the story. It was easy to picture the town and the events and understand both the draw of the place and the need for something more. I was especially pleased that there were unexpected twists toward the end that added drama to the story and also that all were well resolved thus bringing the story to a satisfying end. Too often it seems authors get bored with their stories and the last parts are rushed, out of theme or poorly tied up. That wasn't the case here at all. The story had a nice even pace and remained true to itself right to the end. I especially loved how the Bible stories the children grew up with from their preacher father were a part of how Catherine Grace defined her world but so did the Dairy Queen since children give everything equal weight and only sort things out later. Well done and a good read. The only downside for me is that I'm now craving a Dairy Queen myself which is definitely not my salvation ).
